Tangled Timelines

The election of new Pacifica officers is, as so often, behind schedule. In recent years, it has been a haphazard affair that brought to the various Boards a devastating number of unqualified wannabes and escaped the attention of most eligible candidates.

Now, in its infinite lack of wisdom and with the Election Supervisor having resigned in utter frustration, the PNB has decided to proceed, unescorted, with an election, loosely scheduled to take place in February. That date, however, is likely to be an optimistic rest stop on a tangled timeline.

This extends rather than establishes a concern among people who have come to think of the Pacifica Board as the epitome of sandbox governance. So it came as no surprise that representatives at last night's "Special" meeting of the Board chose to ignore all timelines—and, indeed, Robert's Rules—in order to forge ahead with the election, come hell or high water.

One devoted insider suggests that a close look at the list of candidates, for that's where the money is coming from. As our informed source points out, the lists are not being updated, and that is the crux of the matter. Careless unprofessional handling of these elections form roadblocks that retard station operation.

It feeds the stagnancy that has gripped Pacifica stations in recent years and keeps the door open for JUCs and others of their ilk. It is a major factor in undermining Lew Hill's vision and to some it provides the delusion of a coup opportunity.

If you missed last Tuesday's streamed meeting on this subject, you may wish to spot-check the audio clips. It will confirm the futility and further explain why your favorite radio station has been brain dead for so long.

  1. It's vitally important that we recognize that Pacifica operates as an invisible nation answerable only to itself.

No listeners (invisible), and merrily ignoring innumerable laws and regulations applicable to others, all without adverse consequences of any sort.

    Quite a unique little institution.

  2. This is a battle of stubborn egos Chris. On the one hand a group determined to do everything possible to undermine and destroy Pacifica unless they are in charge and another group so convinced of their integrity as champions of a Pacifica that counters the evil mass media that they will not tolerate any dissent whatsoever. No wonder they don't meet in person as the building would be crushed by the collective weight of their massive egos.

  3. I feel sorry for the guy who is the parliamentarian. Whatever he is getting paid, he should get double. I'm assuming he is getting paid. No sane person would do this for free. Run Tatum. Run for your life.

  4. A special shout out to the chair whose idea of debate is to allow endless arguments posed as a question about a proposal which had not been formally presented and declare it doesn't count against the time allocated. Even Kathy Davis found this odd and stepped in. Passive Aggressive or incompetent..You make the call.

  6. Congratulations on reaching one million views. I hope people were able to see your documentation of crimes and misdeeds by Robert Knight, Samori Marksman and Mario Murillo. If they have not, they should. It is worth reading - they destroyed WBAI and allowed thieves to be free to pillage at will - cautionary note for the future.

    1. Kudos Chris! Appreciate your long term commitment. Please restore the number of view feature.

Crimes and misdeeds need to be things of the past, a clean broom and remove Reimers.

    2. This is typical of the calumnious comments, usually suggesting sexual improprieties or criminal activity, that Paul DeRienzo regularly made about Mario and Samori on the blue board—almost always anonymously because PDR is gutless. Now he soils Chris’s blog with them.

I knew and liked Robert Knight. I thought his skills as a reporter and a producer declined after he started working with Dennis Bernstein—an egotistical mediocrity. He deteriorated to a parody of himself by the end of his career—and the end of his life.

I didn’t know Mario personally, but he was a friend of my friend Ibrahim Gonzalez. He’s taught courses at various local universities, is devoted to his wife and children, and is knowledgable about the Caribbean and South America. His Friday show was one of my favorites while it lasted.

Samori never destroyed anything except his own health. He died young and broke. His crime, if any, was to embrace a radical left agenda, which pleased me but did not please everyone.

DiRienzo is a Ukrainian nationalist with a fierce loyalty to to Eastern Orthodox Church. My grandparents fled the Ukraine because of the fanaticism of this church and its Jew hating adherents. He’s a mediocre programmer and a light weight intellect. He laughably refers to himself as a journalist. I’d take one Robert Knight, one Mario Murillo, or one Samori Marksman over twenty DeRienzos.

    3. I knew all three men - Mario Murillo is a conflicted man. His father spent many years in prison for money laundering and Mario sexuallly harrassed many producers @ WBAI before he quit. Robert Knight, despite ll his talents, had a SERIOUS drug problem, destroyed station equipment and carried on a sexual relationship with Valerie Van Isler in exchange for a no show job - he had a sweet deal. Samori allowed pals like Dred scott Keyes to loot and steal the station blind - the station was sick for years - glad Chris has exposed this sickness!

  7. One million views? Why not? This site is the only one offering real information on Pacifica and WBAI.
Chris has his views but he welcomes opposing views. I knew he was having an impact because the insiders would grumble about him at the station. He won't win any popularity contests in the hermetically sealed bubble that is WBAI but on the outside, he is OK.

  8. Thanks again for your blog, Chris. Many don't survive, but amongst the necrosis yours has prospered. Kudos to you!

Besides the uses you yourself put to your blog, it's also important that there is a forum that listeners can go to to get some sense out of the nonsense, be it BAI itself or Pacifica more generally.

So, congratulations on the 'seven', & for providing the port of call. Forverts!
