(Note: Nielsen has 13 rating periods a year. Dec is actually part November and a chunk of Dec and they shoehorn in a “Holiday Ratings Period” for #13)

And according to the on-air announcements, the last begathon came up $40,000 short. They are asking for 400 listeners to each contribute $100 to make up the shortfall. WBAI can't make current expenses, even with the reduced rent at the new transmitter location.
ReplyDeleteThe plea for $40,000 to make up the shortfall also appears on WBAI's website.
DeleteIf they announced a $40,000 shortage, you can be sure that it is actually a larger amount—Reimers is given to customizing WBAI's incomes and outlay.
DeleteThat said, a fund drive that rebroadcasts stale, previously ineffective commercials cannot expect any kind of success.
Correction please; 399 more donations are needed. Ron Daniels personally donated $100 as he made everyone aware of on his Christmas Eve show.
DeleteIt's a part of his spiel—I always have a feeling that he is talking about the same $100, again and again. Of course, it he is really coughing up a Benjamin, repeatedly, it is a small payment for the self-promotion he gets—including the on-air commercials he creates to sell tickets for his trips and conferences. The man is one of many who use WBAI to solicit interest (and payment) that neither benefit Pacifica nor WBAI.
DeleteHere's a public list of the ratings in the NYC market: https://ratings.radio-online.com/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb001
ReplyDeleteThe bottom edge of the scale is 0.1 - the number of listeners may actually be smaller then calculated. Anyone have access to the real PPM count?
KPFK was about $75k short on its December drive. And the October drive was either $75k or $100k short, depending on whether you believe the GM or Treasurer.

Those numbers are beyond embarrassing for a full power NYC FM signal. These people really should sell the license and podcast instead. I'll bet the audience would actually increase.
ReplyDeleteI have little doubt that as Maxie III's planned changes re Strip Programming, Best Practices inspired by and modeled on NPR/Nonprofit and Commercial Best Practices, and Extended Surveyed and Consultative Community Outreach come into effect WBAI and Pacifica will be transformed.
ReplyDeleteBy the Way, there was to have been an All Hands gathering of Maxie, Reimers, Perry and all producers at 388 last week to introduce and discuss Maxie's Transformational Evolution. Have we any information as to how it went down?

Mimi issued her decree that no changes in programming be made without the staff consent and a denial that the programming has anything to do with the issues. The issue is those long fundraisers. Mimi has issued her orders and she expects full compliance.
DeleteEvery show Kane does is a repeat of the previous show. Every show is a stream of consciousness rant about the same things, over and over: mascots, rule of Christian discovery, Indian gaming, etc., etc.
ReplyDeleteTruth, articulation and moral consciousness are not among Kane's detectable characteristics. He is an embarrassing, self-appointed spokesperson for Indigenous Americans, but that is obviously not something that bothers him.
ReplyDeleteI am not saying that WBAI shouldn't carry a program for North American Indians, but I think they are wasting far too much air time on the kind of drivel Kane spews.
Nielsen recalls first two days of December PPM monthlies and delays release of remainder markets indefinitely.

Thank you. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
DeleteRon Daniels .... Can you say BORING and REPETITIOUS ?
ReplyDeleteIs it any wonder why NOBODY is listening .
BTW , Linda Perry is keeping him in the drive time lineup . NOT a good sign.
Constantly hugging oneself makes it’s difficult to speak with any kind of coherence.
DeleteNone of us are perfect, but Linda is doing the best she can, and perhaps a little beyond that.
Heard him say today he will have a 1 hour slot (3-4, or 4-5?), as opposed to current 2 hours (3-5).
DeleteIf it is but the first step, let's hope for WBAI's sake that the exit door is next.
DeleteI find that while Daniels' intelligence is evident, it is obscured by his largely groundless ego. He takes himself far too seriously for me to find much credence in his self-serving babble.
Gary Null commented today on the program schedule changes, in support of Linda Perry. And gave his opinion of those producers resisting change.
ReplyDeleteArchives Gary Null Show Mon, Dec 31, 2018 12:00 PM, from 49:20 to 57:17.
Null wrote an excellent summation of WBAI's long downward journey. I am preparing to post it.
