A West Coast view of WBAI

As some of us have periodically pointed out here, WBAI's so-called "management" and some of the producer/hosts who routinely pander to them (Haskins, Kathy Davis, Linda Perry, John Kane, et al) are often actually aware of their own considerable limitations as broadcasters, but that does not discourage them from occupying, year after year, positions for which they are eminently unqualified, nor does it inspire them to take advantage of that time and correct their deficiencies. So they abandon all principles and responsibilities to maintain what they wrongly regard as their turf, stagnating and fossilizing at the expense of listener-supporters and the rich source of fresh voices and ideas that New York represents.

While this may not be clear to the WBAI inmates themselves, it has not escaped the notice of the station's listener-sponsors who have simply tuned out and reduced the listenership to its all-time lowest number. —Chris

Dr. Cohen's observations tell it like it is.

One of the Pacifica mantras is to avoid corporate underwriting at all costs—even if it means killing the network by adhering to an absolutely absurd, catastrophic and anachronistic business model of "100% listener supported."  Maybe if Pacifica had a bit more coin in its pocket, it could pay money to quality programmers and produce worthwhile programming.

But more than that.  As I understand the thinking, it goes something like this: Pacifica would never take an ad from an "evil corporation"—for example from Procter & Gamble (they make Ivory soap), or from a wicked oil company (the Penzoil reference). That somehow Pacifica and its programming is too "good," too  "pure," too "virginal," to be soiled by association with these scoundrels.

And yet, Pacifica will get behind some of the most reprehensible products and bogus "cures" that are out there and push these products incessantly during fund drives onto a gullible and vulnerable public/listener base in order to make a buck.

[Or, in the case of Lopate, hire a  programmer with more than a little taint of sexual and ?other forms of workplace harassment.  Don't forget, the reporting states that the workplace training to try and get him to stop this abusive behavior was ONE ON ONE DIRECTED AT HIM at WNYC.  But Pacifica will hire a person out of the gutter if it thinks it will put a few shekels into its coffers.   And when there is an outcry, especially from women, essentially tell them "there, there, calm down little hysterical lady.  Trust Berthold and the rest of us men.  We know what we're doing.  And we wouldn't and will not change a thing because of your outrage."]

Pacifica has a deep and very shameful stain on its soul for promoting absolutely horrible fake cures, get rich schemes, "how to achieve nirvana on earth in 3 ez steps" and all manner of clap trap that has been amply exposed here and at the Waves [PacificaRadioWaves listserv].

My point is that rather than being pure or "virginal"  by eschewing commercial underwriting, I see Pacifica as deeply soiled and absolutely filthy for backing these products and their purveyors.

Even worse than that is Pacifica's urging  its listeners to embrace  the most incredible un- and and pseudo- and anti-scientific thinking on the planet.  That is a horrible and very obvious byproduct of what Pacifica has done to make a buck.  It has whored itself out by teaching its listeners  crushingly harmful ways of thinking and evaluating/mistrusting evidence and data, and to embrace magical thinking in its stead.  I am sure the damage done to the thinking processes of these gullible listeners has created disaster in their lives far beyond any immediate damage done by constantly promoting these charlatan wares.

Even worse than that is the absolute moral outrage of taking a person's money for a product and not even shipping it to them.  This is  fraud and thievery on a massive scale.  It's unclear to me why that alone hasn't shut down this bogus-cure promoting station and network. I've observed that the listeners are actually better off to have not received these ridiculous products in the mail, even though they are victims of terrible consumer fraud and theft.

I am sure there are any number of examples where listeners have been seduced by these false promises, and have paid their hard earned money for them, and tried "double helix water" to, for example, help their back pain. Only to discover, 4-6 months later, that the pain was not due to a deficiency of double helix water, but to metastatic cancer to the spine, discovered later than it otherwise might have been, to the detriment or death of the poor sucker Pacifica listener.  Pacifica knows this.  It has been pointed out to them endlessly. The blood of that listener is on Pacifica's hands.

So whatever "purity" Pacifica claims by avoiding underwriting is completely upended by the vicious cruelty to make a buck that Pacifica daily engages in--by embracing charlatans and their cures. And endlessly promoting them. Even when they've been called on it many, many times. And again, even worse than that is the creation and "underwriting" by Pacifica of deeply flawed, irrational, anti-scientific, suspicious ways of thinking about the world. Pacifica says,If you know nothing about something, don't go to school. Don't read a book. Don't believe a soiled "professor" or engage with "big pharma." Simply make up your own science, and plant doubt in people's minds about the work and research created by scientists and thinkers 10,000 brighter and more acute than the Pacifica branded critics and soothsayers.

The last paragraph is meant to tie in with the two paragraphs directly above it. The thinking here is exactly parallel to Pacifica's promotion of bogus and harmful products to make a buck.  Another Pacifica mantra is to embrace, promote and glorify all kinds of killers and brutal credos that they shilled for--Che, Fidel, Mao and other "freedom fighters" for the "people."  When many of them are blood stained murderers plain and simple.  Or the promotion of ideologies--socialism, "new dialectics", the evils of capitalism—and on and on that have been the underpinning of the most monstrous chapters in human history.  It is exactly the same as killing someone, through delay of diagnosis, with "double helix water" only on a scale that killed has killed millions and millions of people.  Capitalism and democracy, as practiced, are not perfect.  Far from it.  But at least it allows, for now, some modicum of free speech and ability of its citizens to criticize itself in order to try and do better, complete a feedback loop, and hopefully improve people's lives over time, rather than snuffing them out with a gun blast to the head.  —Stephen D. Cohen

  1. Stephen hits a nail on the head of WBAI's long history of unethical and illegal behavior and complete disdain for whatever listeners it still has. I would argue, however, that any time spent talking about underwriting is an utter waste because, really, what company would actually spend money to promote itself on WBAI with so few listeners and its, uh, uneven programming? Underwriting is unlikely to raise enough money to even pay for their endless and embarrassing streamed meetings. It's long past the time to stop blaming Bertold. The PNB is responsible for this.

    1. Good points, Kim.

I see on the Wave that Randy Credico accuses Berthold of duplicating some premium materials as well as taking money for some that are never sent out. You are absolutely right to shine the spotlight on the PNB, but that body's neglect of responsibilities—although it allows Berthold to keep up his deplorable activities—should not give cause to ease up on him. Criminal activity is criminal activity.

    2. The PNB may be "responsible" but in effect the four directors from WBAI sitting on the PNB hold the ultimate power to direct/redirect WBAI's path, just as every station's directors have the power to examine the behavior of their own station's employees. They are strangely silent, however, unless I've missed something.

  2. Let's never forget that Gary Null sits atop this rotten heap - and has for almost 40 years.

Last week, Null took a call from a man who claimed to have been a terminal patient - until he attended Gary's Retreat. Because of the retreat, the caller is now in full remission and healthy as a horse. He never mentioned a single thing that Null did to actually effect a cure, of course. Because Gary Null, faux PhD, has never cured anyone, of anything.

This is revolting, moneymaking quackery impossible on any station with a shred of integrity. And, as has been said here before, this sort of scam is the worst, because it preys on the most vulnerable among the audience.

    1. Gary is a busy guy. Red stuff, green stuff, $5,000 retreats that can cure cancer, keeping the station afloat as the single largest fundraiser. Even his reruns raise more money than most of the producers. Stepping in to deliver premiums when the station 'misplaces' orders. He even has his own studio. Amazing.

  4. Well, way over here in the other Pacific [not Pacifica's] coast - in Los Angeles - there were many years of continual and incredible Gary Null products, thoughts, promotions and expensive stuff of any color SOLD, pretending to be a "gift" aka "premium" when it was cash to the station and to pay Null for merchandise from him & his company.

Because every volunteer at any time received as many calls complaining about "why didn't I get my premium after I sent in my $$$ donation Last Year ? " that the unpaid volunteer could not answer nor get mailed out either, it was a shameful place to answer phone "pledges".

For many years, Roy Tuckman loved and applauded and played Gary Null, promoting and thus advertising his credibility, as a host of a 4 nites 6 hr each show.

So 1 whole night of 6 hrs was often, basically, dedicated to his 'friend' and whom Roy promoted [and probably rec'd some samples too ] with enthusiasm and to get funds to support KPFK.

Anything was, is done to get $$$ and then as explained in various places, including here, that there are no laws or by-laws broken, so why worry? why question what is done to get money "when we need it so badly !!!" =exclaimed by anyone near Pacifica = regularly.

All that is written about WBAI applies to KPFK in LA too - except the rent not being paid and the debt and court and financial crises that cut across alllllllll 5 ? radio stations nationwide to repay .

And this WBAI blog focuses on their own and since it is too painful, boring, and shameful to listen to KPFK anyhow, and much worse at it's long, exhausting "fund drive" begging, exhorting, advertising, promoting weird stuff and dubious services with lots of fake promises too... to know if Null is out of LA or continues in any way there too.

Warning was given that another 1 month [or longer ?] will begin Aug 1, 2018 - yet again at KPFK. 'Never enough' is the motto.

Maybe someone else can stand to listen and know about Null's inclusion or expulsion or why it came about in LA ?
    did it ?

All the suggestions, rants, bickering and demeaning other Pacifica loyalists that occur, nothing seems to make the whole shebang better, or more transparent, or more honest and to stop make Fake promises - and fake assumptions too.then claimed those are "facts". Not.

LA is being brought into this conversation here because there is no equivalent commentary taking place about KPFK that is found.

Even tho there is 1 site dedicated to KPFK and it's dis-ingenuousness [problems].

tho there is this : KPFKcommentators.blogspot.com

  7. From WBAI:
    Statements from Lopate staff members:

Jessica Raimi: I worked with Leonard as his engineer in the early days of his weekly show “’Round Midnight” on WBAI in the late seventies and as an intern on his WNYC show in 2010–2011.

Leonard was never remotely harassing to me nor, as far as I was aware, to anyone else on his mostly female staff at WNYC. He was always encouraging and appreciative of my work, both my research and writing for him at WNYC and, in our WBAI days, of my engineering and my own radio productions, which he a couple of times presented on his show with me as his guest.

In my experience Leonard has been an ideal colleague. He maintains the highest standards in his work and the work of his staff, is clear about what he wants and open to others’ ideas, and is meticulous about giving credit where due. I consider myself fortunate to have been associated with his shows, and deplore WNYC’s treatment of him.

From Barbara Cahn, Deborah Freeman, Hugh Samson, Susie Stulz: We are a group of producers who worked for The Leonard Lopate Show while it was still on air, and work for him currently in producing Leonard Lopate at Large. Collectively, we have worked for Leonard for many decades. Some of us have worked with him since the 1990s.

We were shocked at Leonard’s suspension and eventual firing because in our experience, he has always acted as a true gentleman, respectful of our views, appreciative of our work, courteous of our time. The work requires him to engage with us intellectually, and he has never ever talked down to us, or attempted to pull rank. He has unfailingly treated us as his equals.

The show itself -- two hours of live radio every weekday -- created an inherently fast-paced environment. Additional stresses cropped up, such as guests who didn't show up on time, or at all, or called from a cell phone with a poor connection. Some guests didn’t have a full command on English. Leonard handled it all without skipping a beat.

We collectively -- and emphatically -- state that we have never experienced any behavior, nor heard any comment from Leonard, that can be deemed offensive to anyone. In our experience -- which spans decades -- he has acted as a true and respectful friend to us.

When Leonard was suspended, we wrote to senior management at WNYC so that our experiences would be taken into account. At least one of us was present at and witnessed one of the incidents that was reported in the press. She insists it did not occur as reported. However, we never got a chance, as we were all denied a voice in the investigation. WNYC management had no interest in speaking to us.

As people who have been in the work world for decades, we understand that certain jobs come with stress, and live radio is one such environment. But a stressful environment isn’t the same as a harassing environment, a fact we believe the accusers didn’t quite understand.

We believe that Leonard was fired because the station wanted to develop a show geared towards millennials. That's why we made it our goal to right this injustice and help him get him back on air. Through the winter and spring we helped him conceive of Leonard Lopate at Large, and are happily producing segments for him once again.

It's important to note that since his firing, WNYC management has admitted that Leonard's termination nothing to do with any kind of sexual or physical harassment.

    1. Would you be so kind as to clarify precisely and explicitly what you refer to as WNYC's 'admitting' that Lopate's firing had 'nothing to do with any kind' of sexual or physical harassment’.

Also, can you explain why, as you hypothesize, WNYC found it preferable to fire Lopate in the fashion it did, rather than simply replace him with a program they thought would have wider appear to millenials. Given legal risk if their basis for dismissing Lopate was ill-founded, that would seem, to a mere layman, quite an extreme approach.

Has Lopate, as of yet, secured legal representation and/or presented a law suit for his wrongful dismissal and character assassination, aka libel and/or slander?

      If not, why not?

I’ll note the following: I find your defense of Lopate as a swell fellow to work with a bit hard to swallow. A number of his early engineers at WBAI found him an exceptional nuisance, even when compared to any number of other ego-mad talents – to put it kindly. Perhaps he transformed. I have no way of knowing. I do know that a number of his early engineers chose to move on as quickly as possible.

I’ll note further: Annoying personality aside, Lopate is far above the present level of the greater part of WBAI/Pacifica’s ‘talent’.

He has his fans, of course.

      If he does well, fine.

If WBAI/Pacifica roused itself to make use of the vast pools of talent at their doorstep, that might not be bad, either.

  11. yet another question that may go unanswered ...

the title of this post is "a west coast view of WBAI" ...could that mean that Steve Cohen is on west coast and listens to NY radio from here ?
Or where is the connection that's not apparent - as all comments refers only to NY's radio & staff there ?

very confusing! Please clarify to us too, who are so far and still reading this site. Noticed that when KPFK [in West Coast LA] is mentioned here, there are Q and concerns- but hardly any answers - so effect remain as if these Q are in invisible printed ink - with no reply. Or surprisingly. an occasional, rare, 1x per topic one. It is strange to have such protective invisibility, especially here.

    1. Dr. Cohen is located on the West Coast, but he tunes in to WBAI via the stream. I don't know if he uses his computer directly—I listen to the other Pacifica stations through Alexa. That works very well although the erratic volume shifts often make WBAI even more unlistenable.

I am not sure how well known the problems Pacifica's other four stations are to BAI listeners, but I think many in this area are beginning to see the current mess as system-wide.

Reimers airs Margaret Prescod here, but I believe her NY listenership is quite low. We are in the middle of another fund drive now and this morning they rebroadcast for the umpteenth time Prescod's pitch for a Robeson set. It is hopelessly outdated, so we hear her once again claim that she only has 15 sets left, that she had to fight fiercely to get these copies, etc. The one-hour plea (with WBAI's pledge number dubbed in) is at least a couple of years old. This kind of thing is rampant, no effort is made to bring it into the present, so it is a very obvious instance of deception.

They have several weeks between fund drives, but there is no sign of any preparation—they just throw this stuff on the air, and then they wonder why nobody is biting.

Rather than expecting other inhabitants of this particular rock in space to explain existence to you, it might prove productive if you did a bit of that work yourself.

      Just a little.

For example, the fact that you’ve cited as alarming and astonishing as to the fact that a corporation is responsible for the actions of its duly formed and authorized subdivisions and their managers is either absurdly and transparently disingenuous or reflective of a complete and utter lack of experience and observation in this culture.

why do some people enjoy reacting so negatively when they don't happen to agree or like someone else's views, comments or questions ? Is that commentator 'Indigopirate' the main 1 higher authority here ?

Or is he assuming that his bad sad life can be easily projected on anyone in any digital platform – that negativity projected on others, instead of dealing with his own angers himself ?

Why are attacks on any commentators [not corporations, systems, policies etc] so easily posted ? - not just here?
That any person is assuming their ‘be-mad-be-mean’ power to then vent their own personal anger - while hiding behind a digital screen is cruel , but common.

And since when is any person/ question required to do a Wikipedia search before asking – as if not allowed to be question anything - here or anywhere ?

While knowing that wikipedia has easy access info - but is also not all accurate, unprejudiced nor balanced & and is used by many to promote themselves only. Is Cohen a famous person with a wikipedia page that everyone must read before asking about him ? who decides that rule ?

Maybe Indigopirate has an investment to claim control and punishment powers over any posts he doesn’t like here, or any that offends him - or he mistakenly assumes refer to him personally. Pledge Lines / 516-620-xxxx are in the NPA/NXX range assigned to Level 3, formerly BROADWING COMMUNICATIONS, LLC (CLEC).

  14. So who is the original creator and first user? Assuming Pacifica / KPFK is the original owner, and Pacifica has failed to register it, and has nothing to contest it's use by WBCQ over several years, it going to be a tough fight to recover it

    1. You appear to be very easily offended.

      Fine.

Pay me the courtesy of saying nothing further to or with respect to me and I’ll happily do the same.

      :)

Or, if you prefer, continue with the ad hominems in place of actual observations or arguments.

    2. Focus people. We need to focus on the real problem here. The inept, incompetent out of control GM who has taken the money saved from the ESRT deal and gave a chunk of it to Lopate. I keep thinking there must be a conspiracy but he just isnt that smart. I will check with Brady.
Maybe I am just not connecting all the dots.

    3. indigo - whoever you think you are : ur b.s. has insured that not only me - but others too -are stopping reading/writing here -
      after this final reply.

Your clear assumption is that you Control this website - unless Chris has ceded it to you and then you do. too bad.

it is now all yours to control, misuse, troll and be mean - while pretending to not be... those behaviors are called "passive-aggressive" = aggressive maneuvers .
An easy 1-up win for ya, and lots of losses too, tho denied. sad.
      bye.

  18. I love Indigo's comments.
If I had a complaint, it would be that, unlike me, he is unfailingly polite.
If one does not enjoy his comments, as I do, there are no laws that oblige you to read them.
