Future or futility?

Tom Livingston Envisions
A Process… On Process…

‘We have a process…

‘I’ve discussed this with people and presented a list of fifty-two attributes… to each station… it’s weighted voting… respondents pick the top seven… I’ve totaled up the scores… KPFK didn’t do that… the search committee can pick the top ten most important attributes… that can be a first step… then I write definitions for those ten things… that presents a draft of the profile of the candidate… typically I like to have a profile of the organization… then when the job description, the profile is finalized, we create a draft posting plan the committee can approve, where we want to buy advertising… typically it takes six to eight weeks for the recruiting phase… then we pick up to twenty of the best candidates… and a person on my staff interviews those candidates… leadership is one of the attributes so ‘what leadership means for Pacifica’ is in front of them… and she’ll create a narrative of their response and score them… then typically narrow the list to eight candidates… we host a video interview with each of the candidates… then with the search committee we narrow to three candidates… and then… we organize everything to do with the final interview… that would typically be in a certain place and I have a question… what’s that certain place… what’s that place we bring candidates to… and then a separate question would be how you make the final selection.’

It would indeed.

  1. This is insane. One laughable notion (among many), that stands out, is the idea that they would find 20 sane people who would want the job

    1. Did Tom study with Sid Caesar or Irwin Corey? Masterful, would love to hear him pitch during a fund-drive. Maybe have him go before the California AG and plea Pacifica's case.

    2. Reminds me of an old joke. A gangster is talking to his crew and lays out an elaborate plan for a heist. When he asks for questions, one guy says that there is one part he doesn't understand. The head gangster says, "What's the part?" And the guy says, "The part that you said after you said, 'Here's the plan' ".

  2. It was a masterful performance. He's worth every penny of the $10k per month he's grifting Pacifica for. And they deserve him.

  3. No more Illustrious Blacks as of today. Progress.

    1. The statement at the start of their normal time slot was "They are no longer on". Don't know whether replacement show is new or moved.

    2. Thank you. That's good news—not that I wish them bad, but they never were a fit. Now let's hope that the so-called "Haitian All-starz" are shown the same door... the list of highly expendables is long.

    3. I'm more concerned by the lack of any criteria to evaluate programming. Decisions are made arbitrarily. Even the Illustrious Blacks could claim they have an audience and deserve to be on the air and no one could really challenge that because there is no real information about how a show is doing. You could look at money raised but no one really believes Berthold's numbers. Its just a mess and now that the money is drying up, their answer is to just force these same people to come up with WBAI buddies. Good luck with that.

    4. Programming decisions have to be made professionally, just like real grownups at real studios, stations, agencies, etc, make them. Formalized criteria are the province of groupthink, bureaucracy, and pr/corporate bullshit.

One person has the authority and makes the decision. Advisers, yes. Small groups to advise and share thoughts, yes.

The decisions and responsibility have to rest with one person.

      Period.

    5. That's fine but Reimers has no criteria and is certainly not acting like a professional.

    6. Reimers has not acted professionally since he lied his way into the job. Unfortunately, we have a Pacifica National Board and a local station board made up of equally ignorant people. The few who have the intelligence and judgement to do what is right for WBAI are inevitably outnumbered or intimidated by the mindless opportunists.

    7. No offense, but of course Reimers isn’t professional. None of them are, with the very rarest of minor exceptions.

These are failing and failed political activists and advocates, with no talent, and no future.

      Nor any possibilities.

      Ever.

I was simply attempting to make the point that formal rules and procedures, which seem to fascinate them, are not only not helpful, but counterproductive.

These are people incapable of cooperation or of making anything happen, actually.

They can plan to discuss making things happen, debate it, divide themselves along various lines and then, in the end, always the same…

      they can’t make anything happen.

Even something so simple as running a radio station or a small network.

  4. Berthold show's his ignorance - Radio is just sitting with a mic and playing music. The latest from the Teflon(TM) GM.

    Dear all,

This is a follow up to my recent e-mail about loading your show content on WBAI. See attached the instructions to do so, We heard you and we are working on having the upcoming show feed the Archives but for now we expect you to spend 10 minutes per week of your life to upload that information so your show can have more listeners and downloads. I asked a few producers to go thru it and it seemed fine. I want to particularly thank Ken GAle for playing along and for inputing his shows in the archives and for giving me feedback.

    Thanks,

  5. Now that all the shows are required to come up with new "Berthole Buddies", why no just make Berthole the new CFO? He could bring the success of his doubling WBAI's income in just months to ALL of Pacifica! -- he can even bring his award winning accounting app to aLL OF pACIFICA: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/piggybot/id844151884?mt=8
