Faction infraction

In case you weren't tuned in this evening, here, in its entirety (except for a tired commercial break) is the Wednesday night LSB meeting as broadcast live.

If, like I, you had the impression that this was going to be a gathering of the entire Local Board, uou should know that the participants were few and, obviously, selected. The host is John Kane, who sounds jittery and obviously doesn't totally believe in freedom of speech, and members of both factions are present, although the destructive Cerene Roberts is not. I imagine she could be seen pacing and cursing up and down that block of Atlantic Avenue. I frankly expected her to come crashing through the skylight and onto the card table. I was wrong, but she did get mentioned—not by name, but as disrupter.

You will notice how reference to the WBAI JUC faction's failure to vote approval of the long overdue audit is met with nervous attempts to change the subject; how one board member keeps pushing the JUC desire to hand WBAI over to MNN (the Manhattan Neighborhood Network)—which, as Max Schmid correctly points out, would spell the end of Pacifica's NY station.

Missing from this show is any semblance of the LSB being unified, having the same goal, or—in general—facing reality. In short, you will probably come away from this show with a pretty good idea of how things stand and are likely to remain standing... until they fall.

Listen for yourself. Relish an intelligent caller's observations and bemoan the many members of WBAI's LSB who simply don't get it.

The show was still on the air when visitors to this blog began to react, Here's a good exemplar—you will find more as further comments come in.

The full meeting sans commercials.

A BLOG VISITORS EARLY REACTION
I listened for a bit, but I'm about to tune away (if that phrase still applies on the net). These are unintelligent, uninteresting, talentless people who, at best, sound as if they're running for the least interesting, least important local school board, ever.

They have no interest in the original mission, or in radio, and are simply wannabe apparatchiks who can't draw a simple conclusion like 'Well, gee, we don't have listeners because we don't have money and we don't have money and had to lay off people because we don't do radio that's interesting or anyone wants to actually listen to except for a very small, very unintelligent, microscopic audience that can't possibly support the radio station.

None of this is new, all of it is obvious, but none of it is obvious to them..

Perhaps most importantly, none of these people are the sort of people who do things, who get things done, who make things happen.

Sure they're mindless leftists who still support the ghost of Samori Marksman, Revolutionary Hero & Savior of The Oppressed, but there are other people out there of similar mindsets who actually get something to happen occasionally.

Not these people.

They clearly have no interest in the foundational ideals which once made the station matter.

They clearly have no interest in radio, only their personal failures and their personal agendas.

The takeaway, I suppose, is the same as it's been for years and years and years and years:

Failures Fail.

  1. This LSB report to the listener is depressing Chris. No one wants to talk about the need to improve programming. Everything is just fine. If only we can get the LMA deal with MNN, if only we can 12 phone lines, if we only had someone like Samori back, everything would be just fine. Oh by the way, restore the news staff and tell those evil people at the ESB to just forgive WBAI's debt.

  2. This LSB broadcast, besides being about members giving long drawn out biographies, just proves that even people who should know better, like Max, are either oblivious to reality, in early stages of dementia or just can't bring themselves to admit the programming is shit.

It's the same old canard year after year. If we advertise, if we appear at the Left Forum, etc. None of these scumbags want to face the truth, but why should they, as long as just enough people send in just enough money to keep them on the air. The best one is how they want a rich person (i.e. capitalist) to come and save their socialist station. Just too funny. I guess they picked that idea up from Cuba whining that capitalist USA has caused them all their poverty. Yes, socialists and communists, once again, not willing to admit their system is a failure and, basically admitting, they need a capitalist to subsidize them.

The excuses never, ever end. I have said it before that WBAI is the druggie or alcoholic who can't get help because he/she won't admit to having a problem.

I have also said that they will roll along until those baby boomers they mentioned start dying off faster and faster. Yes, there may be some bequests in some wills, but how far can that get them? it's funny how WBAI is the one stations that should wish for early deaths of its listeners.

  3. SDL nailed it - these folks are in denial. No one wants to listens to crap radio, they spin the dial (or click on another stream)

As long as a substantial portion of WBAI's programming is "crap", no one will listen, with no verifiable listeners, no one will underwrite a show.

  4. "The success of WBAI's recent fund drive is thanks to you..." as the "Cake" Davis promo opens is nice. After all, thanking all the people who didn't donate is a kind gesture of her. However, I don't think "success" is the right word to use. "Failure" is much better.

Well, I guess that Caribbean parade involvement is expected to garner tons of new listeners. You know they are convincing themselves of that, like LeFevre thinks his stand at the Left Forum does anything. Let's never forget that hysterical pressless conference at City Hall.

When are they going to learn to just hawk organic sex toys?

    It never ends...

    1. Kathy's success story also made me laugh. These fools live in a world that is 90% based on their wishful imagination. Poor Frank, he just continues to live in the past and waste his own money. Linda Perry is to be pitied, as well—her awful, counterproductive promos are aimed at placing the blame for chronic incompetency on the ESB, and that clip from Credico's disastrous steps skit is downright embarrassing. They are, indeed, the gang that can't shoot straight. As they continue blundering, it becomes impossible to feel sympathetic.

    2. I say promote Bates to GM, Davis to PD, Brady to PADZ (Psychic Attack Defense Zapper)and Earth Mum to SA (Station Astrologer). WBAI - New age conspiracy radio!

Let John Kane host a showing of Soldier Blue at The Commons. Wait, the film would never start because he would never shut up.

    3. Frank could wait the table, serve Gary's stuff (with a color of the day) and toss the tip in Kathy's high-capacity lap. Haskins' designated "poet in residence" (did you know he had one?—no kidding) can recite passages from Mimi's Plantation Memories and a chartered bus (driven by Haskins, of course) will take infirm former listeners to visit Reimers and the gang at Rikers, departing from 388 Atlantic every Monday at 3 PM. The Blacks will bring their applause machine and traipse to a Judy Garland montage prepared by Kenny.

Once a month, there will be a pilgrimage to the Samori Shrine where volunteers stitch the latest slogans onto used red caps made in China. A box of lost and found auras will be will be raffled off by volunteer reptilians once a month, the proceeds going to the BAI Benevolent Society, which also benefits from Kane's sale of non-filtered Tomahawk Treats.

  5. Chris,

Please note that Steve Brown, who could easily afford to settle with the FTC in the amount o $150,000, does not donate to Pacifica. Instead the bloodsucking vampire takes out money when Andrea Katz is paid- as was her brother Alan Arthur Katz.

  6. This coverage of the Caribbean carnival sounds like a good idea. Its hard to believe the GM came up with it but if he did then I'll be glad to give him credit.

    1. The Carnival is covered every year - my favorite memory is Samori Marksman being cursed out by one of NY's finest in public - thought he was going to arrest Samori on the spot! Samori in handcuffs - a good thought!
