An unvarnished blog that dips into the past and comments
on the present of WBAI-FM, a once significant, intelligent New York
radio station that for years has suffered chronic abuse from within and now
nears extinction. Your comments are welcomed and will not be censored.
I think it's just another technical problem. I wonder what, if any, FCC rules govern a place like the ESB that houses transmitters and an antenna. There must be some.
I don't think the ESB pulled any plug—not yet, but WBAI has more instances of unscheduled silence than any other NYC station I know of, so I think it's home-generated through a combination of obsolete/aged/cheap equipment and unprofessional maintenance on the part of BAI bozos. Of course, we know that Haskins and Reggie Johnson are inept when it comes to audio, but Reimers's priorities are quite warped, too.
Nevertheless, given the mess they created, it does not seem far fetched to conclude that the ape did it. Of course, we have heard on WBAI's air that the U.S. Government is probably out to pull that plug—the station's powerful, radical voice posing a major threat! :)
Here in North West Queens, the Spanish pirate on 99.7 is coming through loud and clear, and it probably has more listeners than WBAI at this time normally...
I'm listening to WNYC where Jonathan Schwartz's replacement is demonstrating the listener-advantage inherent in renovating a stale radio program. I hope they keep this guy and that he has kept his hands to himself. :)
Neither "Beauty" nor the present WBAI/PACIFICA Begathon will kill this Beast.

ReplyDeleteWonder if they raised more money during the dead air than during the usual recycled promos.
I have long maintained that dead air is the ultimate "thank you gift".
