An unvarnished blog that dips into the past and comments
on the present of WBAI-FM, a once significant, intelligent New York
radio station that for years has suffered chronic abuse from within and now
nears extinction. Your comments are welcomed and will not be censored.
Well, his one shining skill is a very strong survival instinct, so it sounds like he is trying to polish the turd better known as his notoriously dismal job performance.
He'll probably be able to finagle his way back into a corporate job somewhere (as long as they don't have a practice of googling applicants' names). He has two young kids, so for their sake I hope he is able to do better in this economy than, say, the news producers he laid off without severance.
Who is Frank Le Fever? I am starting to think that BAI will survive this and the frequency won't get leased. I am also starting to suspect that they brought Tony Bates back so that the staff currently at BAI will be inherited by the new masters and keep their jobs.
Let's not play games here, PDR, you know who Frank is. I see him as a strutting peacock and apologist-in-chief for Berthold Reimers who wants desperately to be on the "inside," regardless of the integrity that costs him.
As for WBAI's future, I don't share your optimism—it's GAME OVER.
Assume that I never heard Le Fever's name on BAI and I have no idea who he is. Is he on BA staff? LSB member? I didn't see his name on Pacifica's national board.
I am not optimistic, actually I don't really care, I listen to Ian Masters on the internet and prefer NPR for a relaxing radio listening experience. BAI operates within the accepted parameters of the community radio model, and I have a feeling that if the Reese and BAI management convince whoever, that they can still raise money, it will give them a better position during takeover negotiations such as may be. Since Reimers is being cut loose, I am thinking that Reese will be the primary beneficiary of that tactic.
Frank is an LSB member who says that he has served on every committee extant. He is ever present when someone from the front office or Pacifica is around—I think they call it brown-nosing.
I would be very surprised if someone takes over and doesn't realize that the current people can only raise money if they hoodwink the listeners and, even then, they're not very good at it.
