The January 13, 2016 WBAI Piggy Report

I just got back from the LSB meeting and all hell broke loose. The results were announced around 6PM. There was confusion about who was a member and who was not. Brinkley called quorum even though most people were in the hall but not in the room. Vajra showed up as somebody's alternate. One newly elected member showed up and was pissed about the whole thing. The whole thing degenerated quickly into a physical confrontation between Brinkley and RPM.


All of this was completely avoidable. The NES said she wasn't sure when the results would come out but they held their meeting today when the other stations are meeting next week.


Last I heard, the Indy folks were outside waiting for the cops to file a report.

Additional Election Results Notes:

•As noted in the ballot instructions, tied rankings were not permitted.
•Spoiled and blank ballots are marked as “Abstain”.
•Simply Voting rounds to two decimal places by default when transferring surplus votes.
•Passwords allowed the voter to login, under their unique identity. The voter password was also included on the paper ballots.
•Receipt code is a code that displayed on screen and was issued after the voter completed their vote, essentially a voting receipt. Only online voters had access to their voting receipt since paper ballots were entered manually.


I should also list the top alternates given the mess this whole election has become and the dispute over Lynne Stewart's eligibility. In addition, she may not be able to serve due to possible health concerns.

  1. Its the little things I find interesting because it doesn't take money to fix or at least come up with a plan. A flaw in a check resulting in the loss of a big donation? Why do they have more than one bank account when Pacifica claims WBAI is paying more in bank fees than any other station? Compliance with copyright laws regarding premiums? Effective use of the space at the station? He actually has a good idea about having offices on the second floor and only the station on the third floor but how is he going to build out the space? Last but not least, this insistence on not using Pacifica accounting software is just odd.

  2. To be honest, I feel like I have read all this before. It just seems like the same old same old.

    What really gets me is PAYING Tony Bates, a man so hated at WBAI to come back. I bet a lot of people will be pissed off when they hear that.

    It still boggles my mind that a station in the middle of the FM dial with 50,000 watts has so much trouble making the paltry sum they need to break even.

    I've said it before and will say it again. I think they have finally hit their limit regarding how much money their listenership can and/or is willing to contribute. They need to work within that framework, and that's it.

    1. Paying Tony Bates.... that one struck me, too. Reimers has no morals, no decency, no brain. This is a man who was forced to leave WBAI for sexual harassment, which on at least one occasion was witnessed by other staffers. There were over 100 signatures on the petition that finally ousted him. Reimers expressed his sorrow at losing such a good man. WBAI is utterly unbelievable and it is only because it has become so insignificant that the clowns there can get away with all their crap and those embarrassing "shows."

  7. I thought Lynne Stewart was either dead or still in prison. How a place would hold a friend of murderous terrorists as their hero is amazing. However Pacifica/WBAI is an isolated world like Fox News so one should not be surprised at bizarre behavior.

    Anyway as I've said elsewhere. Watching these electoral/political shenanigans is both sad, and perversely amusing. The strong emotions even violence, and out west the appearance of people with guns.

    One would think that we were watching the internal struggles of some Third world Tropical Hell-Hole. Or if you like the neo-facist/Nazi mayhem an Eastern European former Soviet client state.

    Same demented passion.

    Though their stakes are perhaps bigger than those of a forgotten, and very failed little communist racist snake oil voodoo radio network.Btw from what i remember there seem to be several folks involved that are not eligible to be involved...nothing new.

    I remember when the "JUC" faction tried to get the entire prison population of Rikers Island validated as listener voters. This of course so they would vote for them, and install them in power for eternity.

    If they make a comedy movie out of Wbai that scam would be the comedic money shot of the whole film!

    Speaking of the "JUC" do anyone ever find out who was, and maybe still is bankrolling them? I mean their members most of them can afford lunch yet fly to the coast, and stay in hotels regularly to cause mayhem throughout the network. Just wondering...i mean i sure suspect one or two that could do it. i just wondered if they were ever found out, and if this were allowed by the dreaded by-laws.

    1. Lynne Stewart has been out of prison for quite some time now. They are, of course, working on Mumia, the cop killer who—according to the BAI bozos—has one foot in the grave due to mistreatment or lack of treatment. His so-called "commentaries", which they love to air, are a bland rehash of the week's headlines, stirred well with racism and hatred, but the remarkable thing is that he doesn't at all sound like someone at death's door.

      Were I managing the nation, such crap would not be aired.

      The "election" is highly suspect, but they are all going to slip into that abyss of obscurity very soon, and they will go down screaming and pointing fingers at each other.

      It's great that you continue your podcasts—I'm about two behind, but I'll catch up.

    Is there a video of all this? If so, get it on youtube and get it to go viral. Maybe it will get attention and people donating to see another fight at the next LSB meeting.

  9. I can add nothing to the election discussion, other than it is one derailment after another with these people. I wanted to thank SDL for turning me on to Nina Simone. Awesome! I am going to start collecting Ms Simone's music. Sometimes, I really feel I was born too late. Most everything today stinks. Sorry to go off topic,Chris. Now back to the train wreck that is,unfortunately,this station.

  13. Now for something weird. Challenger Radio in Italy on 846 khz MW is relaying an old Off The Hook at this very moment. Considering I have never heard mention of this relay, I wonder if OTH or WBAI even know of this. Weirder is that the relay started at 2:45 PM (1945 UTC), so I wonder if they will just play a piece of the show and not its entirety.

    Just thought I'd mention it. btw, I'm on the Rovigo, Italy sdr on globaltuners.com.

  14. I recall other outfits in Europe played bits of or whole 'Bai programs. I don't remember which outlets did it. However "Off the Hook was one, and Jay Smooth's program another. Jay's show was also played in Japan. Before I walked the plank a German...a Berlin University station I think, used to re-broadcast some of my shows. I remember the host there emailed me. He'd never heard such an "unusual American Black person" before...he was serious. I took it as a compliment.

    1. Back in my WBAI time, we occasionally sold programs to other stations. The BBC bought "The Battle For Danang," a documentary based on Dale Minor's reportage from Vietnam (ABC also aired segments), and "I Can't Go Home Again," Marcia Tompkins' series from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which included a secretly recorded Klan meeting. The latter was also bought by a station in Detroit. I should add that we never made any effort to sell programs (we probably should have), but people, including the media, were well aware of us back then.

    This is very true Chris. During the build up to the invasion of Iraq WBAI covered most of the peace, and anti-war activities.

    Our whole signal...the actual broadcast day..for a week or more. The signal of WBAI was picked up by a Dutch local station. These are community stations. Similar to public access. One of them took our online signal, and just piped it out live!

    This was one of those moments when the station was somewhat relevant again. The early days of the Occupy Movement similar. Some on air folks like Reggie Johnson Jay Smooth myself, and a few others covered their events live.

    We covertly did this either on our shows or like Reggie, and I during our engineering shifts...we would sneak in live stuff from the park via the Occupy online signal. On our shows we'd take calls from folks at Zuccadi park..which we called "Zucchini" park. This btw against the then wishes of management. They changed their minds when they saw they could cash in on all this.

    During 9/11 when we could have done historic work...hell we were four blocks from frigging Ground Zero!! We dropped the ball completely, and absolutely. 'But that's another sad story.

    1. They have an odd notion of what "free form" means... they tend to confuse it with sloppiness. WBAI always saw having a flexible schedule as an advantage from which the listeners could benefit, not as an excuse to cover up ineptitude. You and Reggie had thee right spirit.

  16. As an addendum. As I suspected, Challenger only played 15 minutes of OTH, until the top of the hour then went to Feature Story News. I occasionally run into the owner of the three(?) Challenger Radio stations on the Italian sdrs on globaltuners.com and chat with him a bit. Next time I see him I'll ask what's up. I'm not sure if it was broadcast by Challenger direct or by the IRRS (Italian Radio Relay Service, an English language Italy based radio service) which is relayed for several hours daily by Challenger. Independent Italian radio is very murky and mysterious. Hell, it wasn't until recently that Italy finally, after decades, passed actual broadcasting laws. before that, Italian radio stations were often called "unofficial" because there were no laws or licensing to define what was a legal station and an illegal station. Weird broadcasting country that Italy.
