Reimers' bottled whine.

Berthold Reimers, the grossly overpaid, totally unqualified manager of WBAI has somehow succeeded in keeping his job for the past eight years. Why that is so remains a mystery, but it is not a stretch to see it as an indication of the corrupt practices of the current Pacifica National Board's majority.

If you have tuned in to or spot-checked WBAI recently, you have undoubtedly noticed that the listener-killing program downgrade has been escalated to a point where it is dominated by simple-minded, black-oriented chatter; bland, black oriented music; amateur, often black-oriented health advice; and embarrassing rewrites of history, based on the scams of Henrik Clark, "Dr. Ben" and other shameful con artists—all aimed at gullible, under-educated black listeners by morally bankrupt opportunists like Tony Bates, Ron Daniels, and now Reimers and Byrd.

This is painful for any intelligent person to listen to, but even more so for black listeners, who rightly see it as a return to the stereotyped characters of Mantan Moreland, Amos and Andy, et al—Uncle Tom reborn.

Outrageous infomercials in which bogus products are pitched at outrageous prices, and often not even delivered, have been aired with such frequency that they do more harm than good. Revisionist history, wherein everything but the moon originated in Africa spews out from WBAI wrapped in a sheer veil of racism, ignorance and indoctrination. The station once admired for its integrity, independence and broad scope has become a bad joke. The perpetrators seem oblivious to that fact, but the listener-sponsors have spoken and the present drive will in all likelihood be the most unsuccessful one to date.

Berthold Reimers rarely emerges from his hole in the ground, but when he does—at PNB meetings, for example—he inevitably compounds that image of a nonentity.

That is how it has been until recently, when this amateur decided to play Program Director. He shuffled, replaced and discontinued shows with amazing wantonness, now not only offending the remnants of an audience but angering hosts whose ineptitude, ego and selfish agendas had contributed to the listener exodus.

He did this from behind his imaginary green curtain, too cowardly to face the volunteers he was discarding. Allegedly an accounting professional, Reimers has yet to prove that he knows diddly about fund-raising, but he surfaced on Gary Byrd's show after the smooth-talking disc jockey told him that he wanted 50% of the money he raises for WBAI to go to Haitian relief.

Reimers, himself a Haitian, approved and came on the air to make his own pitch. Haiti was hard hit by Hurricane Matthew and it desperately needs all the help it can get, but Reimers' eight years of mismanagement has WBAI pivoting on the edge of obscurity. It would have made far more sense if the station ran PSAs for the Haitian Emergency Relief Fund—splitting listeners' donations is an invitation to confusion.

All this verbiage to prepare you for Berthold Reimers' long, hysterical solicitation. You will hear him speak of his childhood on "the most African country in the world" and how he literally fell off a truck while still in the womb. You will note that his passion cannot part that green curtain—this is a rancorous man who lives in a world of his own faking. His priorities are decidedly skewed.

Some comments have already been posted—let's hear what you think of the pitch, which may be unauthorized and definitely does not warrant the many repeats Reimers is giving it. Byrd is slick and professional, but don't expect to hear profundity. Neither character fits into the concept that became Pacifica.

Yes, I heard that as I am listening to the Gary Byrd re-broadcast for a 3rd time. Reimers also kept saying to Byrd (who considers himself "African-American") "you Americans" this, "you Americans" that as he was making his pitch for listeners to donate money to Haiti. Reimers seems to have an inward animosity toward America, but he's here monetarily milking the system as much as he can y while he watches WBAI burn to the ground. Why would someone take a job as a radio station manager and hate to come on the air as Reimers clearly states he does? Reimers is "cutting his own throat" re-broadcasting this nonsense and his weak historical overview of Haitian history. Wes Craven's horror movie "The Serpent and the Rainbow" gives me greater visual insight into the social culture of Haiti than Reimers or John Henrik Clarke.

The Reimers/Byrd pitch for Haiti.

  2. Thank you Mr. Albertson for the veracity and profundity of this statement that "no one" at Pacifica or WBAI can justifiably challenge. This blog is far more interesting and informative than the childish LSB/"Robert Rules of Disorder" meetings I've spent (and wasted)valuable hours of time listening to.

    1. So do I. Simply put, Trujillo was a ruthless dictator. My late uncle was the Danish consul and became the head of the Diplomatic Corps in Ciudad Trujillo and, subsequently, Santo Domingo? He had lived there since 1925 when my grandparents moved there with their five children, including my 13-year old mother. I heard horror stories about Mr. T from him.

    2. The US occupied the DR in 1916, as it did to Haiti the year before. The occupying forces established a local army to impose order. Trujillo joined it and trained with the US Marines. He rose quickly through the ranks and gained the confidence of US military brass. Later, the US would aid his ascent to power.

Now, I think folks like Byrd and Reimers go too far in blaming the US. But it can't be denied that this country has at least some responsibility for the problems they've had.

    3. For all the leftist Jews (particularly Sista Mimi): Rafael Trujillo accepted 800 German and Austrian Jewish refugees between 1940-1945 who settled in Sosua, DR and set up a dairy and cheese factory and whose descendants remain there until this day, unlike Cuba and the U.S. who turned away the S.S St. Louis. But Trujillo had a terrible human rights record.

  4. Tony Bates are soliciting money for WBAI and Haiti this (Monday) morning. Bate was arguing that money sent to the Red Cross will not reach the Haitian people, overlooking the fact that, if you give money to WBAI/Haiti, it is certain that least half of your contribution will NOT go to the Haitian people. The only reason to listen to WBAI anymore is to catch occasional nuggets of irony and absurd comedy like that.

    1. I had to tune out on that one. Bates and Daniels are unconscionable exploiters of their own people. Anyone wishing to support the people of Haiti in their need ought to do so directly through a legitimate, honest charity conduit. Those who use WBAI's air to solicit money for this worthy cause include some of the very people who have contributed to building mistrust. Consider the fact that thousands of of dollars were taken by WBAI for "premiums" that never were delivered.

My view is that deciding whether your donation should go to the people of Haiti or to keeping morally handicapped opportunists on the air is a no-brainer.

  9. There are just too many questions about WBAI fundraising for Haiti relief. Beyond the legality under FCC rules, there are accounting questions. Is there a goal of a certain amount? The timing during a fundraiser is questionable. WBAI needs every penny it can get. Is he going to tell the Empire State Building to wait because he is raising money for Haitian relief? What about the other deserving charities out there? I don't think this is intentional. It sounds like they just decided on a whim to raise money. Reimers said he felt guilty about asking Byrd for a premium while Byrd wanted to raise money for Haitian relief. Like Chris said, they should play PSAs and raise awareness but leave the fundraising to someone else.

    2. Its interesting to hear such criticism of past figures. It makes them more relatable somehow to me. I remember reading about how folks thought Lincoln was looked down upon by the Eastern establishment and needed to be guided. FDR got a lot of heat over the New Deal and trying to pack the Supreme Court. Kennedy was seen as soft on communism but I remember reading how he criticized Ike for the missile gap and didn't ask too may questions when Diem was overthrown. Some softie.

      Delete
    3. A few points of historical correction – factual, not interpretive:

Lincoln was not opposed by the eastern establishment. He was a railroad lawyer, a powerful and an influential one, very close to the railroad barons of the day, and instrumental in the creation of what became some of the most powerful monopolies of the day.

FDR did get heat over the issues you refer to – true enough.

It’s true that JFK was concerned that he not be perceived as ‘weak on communism’ – also true enough. The only ‘missile gap’, however, was the fact that the US had an enormous and overwhelming advantage in ICBM’s and IRBM’s. JFK invented this as a campaign issue – he had had full security briefings, and knew the facts and the truth, and knew that the claims he made as to the existence of a ‘missile gap’ were a lie – and a rather spectacular one, at that.

It was not that JFK didn’t ask too many questions as to Diem – he gave formal approval for Diem’s assassination. He agonized over this, as he identified with Diem as a catholic and as a head of state, but it was his decision to have Diem assassinated.

As a point related to the ‘missile gap’: We have inherited a great deal of mythology as to the Cuban Missile Crisis. It’s handy to bear on mind that the Russian decision to place IRBM’s in Cuba was a direct response to the US having chosen to place IRBM’s in Turkey and Italy, with short flight times to Moscow and other significant Russian targets. As part of the then-secret agreements to end the crisis (some parts of which are still highly classified) the US removed those IRBM’s. The actual resolution of the crisis, it is also important to remember, came from Khrushchev – from the Russians – not from JFK, romantic myths of JFK and ‘Camelot’ notwithstanding.

These are objective facts, feel free to check.

As for matter of interpretation, I leave that to others.

WBAI probably contributes less than anything to 2600 being known than any other venue. If anything, WBAI may well drag them down by getting people who pitched for OTH premiums getting mad for not receiving them. Remember, most people will blame a show first and foremast.

      SDL

    8. Like I said. that makes no sense, KGT. OTH is probably far more valuable to WBAI than the station—given the nature and size of its listenership—is to OTH. Typically, Reimers made another very stupid decision.

Anyway, it seems most people who listen and contribute to OTH only listen to that one show on WBAI. Preempting it has probably not only cost WBAI money but an entire genre of listeners. I just don't think Reimers likes OTH in general, since it isn't about slavery, reparations, etc.
