Red sail in the sunset?

The Bumbling Bozos of Berkley may have stumbled deeper into the morass. Here's a flag Tracy Rosenberg saw today:

The 990 tax form for the year 10/13 to 9/14 does not appear to have been filed with the California Registry of Charitable Trusts. Pacifica's status is listed as delinquent.

I assume the 2013-2014 990 form was filed with the Internal Revenue Service as the last possible date to do so was in 2015 and the board was informed that it had been, but it also needed to be filed with the State of California with the accompanying RRF form.

I believe this is the return Pacifica had Armanino prepare in 2015 for a cost of $10,000.

The current 990 form for the year 10/14 to 9/15 was due 5 months after the end of the fiscal year unless an extension was requested.

  4. I looked it up. Form 990 Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax is a 12 page form required to be filled by non-profits. Its a lot of information for any group but especially for a group like Pacifica which has a unique structure. You just don't forget to file a form like this and you don't wait until the last minute to file. The RRF form is filed with the California AG. The purpose of the Form RRF-1 is to assist the Attorney General’s Office with early detection of charity fiscal mismanagement and unlawful diversion of charitable assets. It calls for the most current information available to the charity and is designed to close the reporting delays on significant issues of charity fiscal accountability.

  5. They actually think that talking about skin color every chance they can , is interesting to people.
Like haskins thinks it's his responsibility to tell "our" story .
No you fucking a-hole , it's your responsibility to put on compelling radio.
And that goes for all the other racist's flushing bai down the toilet .

    1. Exactly! Haskins is simply too dumb to realize that he is a part of the problem. They are trying hard to cater to a listenership that mostly exists in their mind.

    2. Wrong. The only potentially paying listenership they have are black and hispanic anti-white racists. Why not have a full court press to squeeze them for all they're worth? Go for it, Michael Geewhiz.

    1. The number and amount of donations is already below acceptable. I think most people are paying for merchandize rather than radio, and when that merchandize either doesn't arrive or fails to cure what ails them, another "listener" disappears beyond the horizon.

      It's a lose-lose situation, regardless.

    2. Of course, most of the donators are giving money for items rather than for shows. These idiots have tried minimal and non-premium beg-a-thons and it's failed miserably. However, you think they'd, at least, have the brains to realize they are a home shopping channel and have a wider variety of items, and be sure the crap is sent and delivered. WBAI management is so stupid that they truly don't even know what side their bread is buttered on.

The truth is that the audience they decided to appeal to wants snake oil, hocus pocus and conspiracy premiums.

    3. What really amazes me is that, after years of being lied to—and very obviously so—there are people out there who will pay inflated prices for something Amazon will deliver to them in a couple of days and at a fraction of WBAI's price.

I also wonder why it hasn't occurred to people that the introduction of yet another cure for cancer (or whatever) can reasonably be taken as proof that previous "cures" must not have worked as advertised and attested to.

What happened to logic? You don't need a degree to conclude that Kathy, Tony, et al are nothing more than dishonest, callous hucksters. Well, many people have seen through the scams and left the station—others were chased away by mediocre programming. It all adds up to a great idea being destroyed by idiots.

Since no word is out about the CFO's meeting with Reimers and the Empire State Building, we might hear an interesting PNB Finance Committee scrum tomorrow.

    4. Chris, the answer to your first paragraph is the same as to why people follow cult leaders, religious charlatans, etc. If you listen to most of the callers, you'll see that their intelligence is on the same level as people who believe in the TV preacher curing someone on TV. When I started listening, WBAI had callers who were well educated (or, at least, well read), who could speak on a myriad of subjects, often in more detail than we needed to know. Yes, often they were of one sort or other of left wing ideologue, but knowledgeable, none the less.

Didn't you know there are many cures for cancer? There are as many cures for cancer as you can claim in books and DVDs dedicated to the topic. Notice no one has come onto WBAI and told us the story of how that cure for cancer premium they bought has made them all healthy today?

The New Age crowd is so gullible that you would be amazed if you spent a few hours among them. They really believe that stones have energies that can cure ills, etc. They may be dumber than even the idiots that believe in televangelists curing someone on TV. You see, the televangelist still has to show someone being "cured" for the scam to work. The New Agers will just accept it sight unseen.

What's the URL for the PNB meeting you mentioned? Anything worthwhile will probably go into executive session, anyway.

    5. They haven't listed it yet, but it will be at KPFTX.org

Yes, I think we have previously noted the dumbing-down of WBAI's audience. The bozos at BAI should have known that this would backfire. A dumb listenership can be fed dumb programs, but only for so long. When this shallow fare accepted, there is no incentive on the part of the producers or management to give them a brain. In fact, while Reimers may well be deliberately giving air time to simple-minded shows, the people who conduct them don't appear capable of moving to a higher level.

Like I said before, it's the old table on 125th Street crowd with the same tired pseudo-African crap. Rather pathetic, but made even more deplorable by the reality of their vandalism. The criminal activity? well, I hope the city and government agencies wake up to that.

SDL, I'm afraid we are repeating ourselves—funny, even a cheap dime novel can make one anticipate the ending.

  7. Have you heard the often played promo for the NY Peace Film Festival? Unless I'm missing something, it makes no mention of being a benefit for WBAI, nor any other connection to WBAI. It kind of sounds like a commercial, unlike the S.O.B.s concert, which is clearly stated as a WBAI benefit.

    1. I've had the same thought about that alleged "promo". If one takes the time to listen carefully, I think it soon becomes obvious that Berthold's BAI Bozos sprinkle the weekly schedule generously with black-oriented and personal commercials.

The S.O.B. event is, as you point out, on the up-and-up, but I would expect nothing less from Chico Alvarez. He is one of the few professionals hidden in this group of self-serving grabbers.

Anyone hear Haskins and Brown this morning? They are deteriorating faster than I had expected—an awful blight on WBAI's fast fading image.

    2. What's new? The now late Elombe Brath got free commercials for the Patrice Lumumba Coalition meetings at the Harriet Tubman School and collected $20 a head and all the money went straight into his pocket- none to WBAI. Y'all should have complained then. Oh, I forgot. They already paid with free labor through slavery.

    4. Yeah, I heard about the opening ten minutes of the Brown/Hay-tie mess, which was all I could take. The upcoming announcements told me I wouldn't stay tuned for long.

Did you hear any of Melvin from 3AM - 5AM? No idea who he is. He was doing a mix of electronica music, calls, talking that reminded me of late 1970s - early 1980s free form, no idea what to do so just let it flow and see if it goes anywhere, unpretentious radio. Not great, but I kind of enjoyed it, just kind of fit the night time vibe, if you know what I mean.

    5. Melvin? That's a new one—never heard of him before. Was he live in the closet or did they download him from somewhere? I'll check the archive.

    6. Having lent Melvin a couple of ears, I can say that his microwave melange was more interesting that Haskins and Pammy Poo, but somewhat labored and too long for the subject at hand. I would have preferred a bit of meandering at times when the needle seemed stuck. The lady on the phone was not a GE spokeswoman. but she made me take a new look at my GE microwave, which has been nuking in my kitchen for too long (some 25 years!).

Need to hear more before I say more... if there is more.

    9. No idea who Melvin is or if he ever did a radio show before, so I will grade him as "has potential." If he has a few random topics at hand to toss out to listeners (both serious and not so serious), can get more callers (which he seemed to be trying to do), stays loose but not sloppy or lazy, he could get a decent night time free form show rolling. I think he was trying for more callers but wasn't getting them. For all I know, his show could be a one shot deal. However, I'd like to hear him again and see what he does a second time round.

I agree about meandering. Toss out a topic, get calls, see what other related topics come from the callers, follow those related topics, etc. with some music in between. Just let the show and callers find their own path. Something like that sometimes leads to very interesting discussions out of the blue...

      Don't say I don't give new people a chance.

    10. Melvin seems to have materialized unexpectedly. Usually when new host(s) are given air time there is at least one promo, but Melvin didn't get any that I heard. Perhaps he's a behind-the-scenes volunteer.

That 3-5 AMTuesday spot is kept open these days, so old Mel just might be a one-shot, as you suggest. Assuming that he didn't enter the closet armed with a digital device, he appears to be adept at moving audio around.

    12. Since I only listened to Melvin with one ear, something told me go download the show and listen to the entire thing with more attention. I'm glad I did. He played a variety of music (I liked the piano music a lot), had a pre-recorded interviews piece asking people about microwaves, did some nice audio mixing, etc. There was more variety then I noticed originally. I have to say that I enjoyed it more the second time round. And, he said, at the end, see you next week. So, maybe he is the new show in the time slot.

How about this idea? Since WBAI is mandated to have 5 more hours of Spanish language programming, and it still wants to be an inclusive radio station for everyone, replace Daulton with a two hour weekly Spanish lessons show. It could be called Español para Estupidos. Since WBAI doesn't care about copyrights, they could download Pimsleur audio based courses (no reading required!), edit off the beginning and ending where it says Pimsleur and copyright and claim them as their own. Now that's the Reimers way!

On the other hand, Geraldo (I knew him when he called himself "Jerry Rivers") was a slimy opportunist, even back in the '60s.

Off topic: 1. Are you familiar with Ken Nordine? 2. What's happening with your podcast?

      Delete
    2. Ken Nordine sounds familiar. A voice over guy? Not the one that died a few years ago, though.

My radio show is temporarily on hold for the following reasons, in order:

The pirate radio operator who was going to transmit my show in Europe turned out to be very unreliable. I can't deal with that.

The CRB (Copyright Royalty Board) ruling a couple of months ago that killed Live365 and drove other netcast stations off the air. I'm not going through all that paperwork and paying thousands of dollars a year to play some music. Hence, my show will be for overseas only.

I got busy with some stuff the past couple of months and couldn't really sit down and focus on the show.

Basically, I have to rethink my strategy now so I don't end up getting sued.

  11. I listened to a few minutes of the PNB Finance Comm. They focused on KPFA and it was a positive discussion. Its not that they don't have problems but the tone was a nice change. They're working the podcasts to get people who are listening on their own schedule and are reporting that they are under budget. They were making the case for a
national development director which makes sense since most of the stations don't seem to have much staff anyway. Agarwal seemed to be suggesting lessons for WBAI to learn here. I didn't hear anything about Agarwal's trip to the East Coast but again I only listened to a few minutes.
Someone made reference to podcasting as a way to get around programmers who have been on the air for years which I thought was funny. I have no idea if they're genuine or full of BS but it was a nice change of tone and makes me wonder if they'll just manage WBAI remotely until they come up with a plan.

    1. I listened to the full meeting and noted the civil tone, which is always welcomed. Still, when WBAI's biggest creditor, a company that holds the station's fate, calls a meeting with Pacifica's CFO, something serious had to have been afoot. In view of that, I think we ought to be somewhat apprehensive. That's why I said the silence was deafening.

Also, I find the rosy KPFA picture suspiciously tinted.

      Delete
    2. I checked hoping to hear something about the NY trip even if it was just a canned statement. They seem to be saying they can't continue as is but they're not able to sell or do a LMA type deal so I'm wondering if they just manage it directly. The business mgr is in Houston. There is no dev. person. They could get one for the network. There is no news staff. Reimers isn't doing much of anything. It makes sense and frankly I prefer bland radio to Haskins et al.

      Delete
    3. It's a dismal outlook, for sure. I believe the farcical nature of Pacifica's governance, the shady manipulation, sordid past and ongoing criminality add up to the curiosity that has many of us sit out the deathwatch.

The time when restoration was still a possibility is now so far behind us and none of the Reimers wrecking crew has a clue, so it's "Damn the future, stay the downward course!"
