The muffled sounds of free-speech radio...

Indigopirate sent in this excerpted audio of the PNB General Meeting, and offers the following comment.

Pacifica, in its dedication to truth, to its listeners, and to its core values of openness, transparency, and democracy, offered the world, once again Thursday evening a clear display of its virtues.

Let the world tremble….

  1. What the hell is that sound in the background? A chimp? Sure sounds like Cheetah.

So Proffitt didn't show up? Why should he even bother, if Reimers rarely does when he's told to.

Jeez, what a joke. It's amazing how blatant it all is. Arrogance on overdrive.

    1. I assumed that it was the sound of PNB members twitching in their pods, but it might just be the ghost of Ma Bell.

No excuse for Reimers' absence—is there ever?

    3. Reimers doesn't need an excuse, since he's Pacifica's god and moves in mysterious ways.

    4. I find it interesting that Proffitt submitted an exit interview in written form, but that Edwards-Tiekert seemed very concerned with posing questions to him with respect to that exit interview, and that he was effectively rebuked and summarily blocked. This, as so many other matters re Pacifica smells very sour, and very suspicious. Little surprise in that, I suppose.

    5. Yes, that whole Proffitt scene does, indeed, reek. The Chairwoman was not at all pleased. I can see her doing the perp walk when the day of reckoning finally comes.

    6. When the collapse comes, I bet Proffitt will have plenty of interesting things to say. He isn't about to keep quiet over a five month job where he was treated like trash by almost everyone. He came in at the right time to see what's going on. If he's smart, he'll give full cooperation to the prosecutors, as I don't think he did anything wrong. I bet he's just happy to be gone.

    7. He had barely started in the job when he went to Europe on vacation, but I guess he kept in touch. Still, I wonder how vocal he will be in public, because he gives the impression of being more civil than most of these people. I also don't think he did anything wrong, but I wonder why he took the job, especially with all the knowledge of Pacifica he had.

    8. My guess, only a guess, pure speculation, is that he's dedicated to the values Pacifica claims to value, and that he hoped, with his experience, and shared values, to be of some help in the service of those ideals.

      Only a guess.

I'd guess, too, that he may very well be as saddened as he is relieved.

    9. I think Proffitt may have been a bit naive and thought that through proper management he could coalesce the Pacificans into improvement. I don't think he really understood the depth of their depravity. The sighs he released on occasion show me he knew he made a misjudgement. I think he really believed being ED meant being ED and having some power. He learned that only EDs brazon enough to grab control and bully get any power, if they are a Foundationalist.

With respect, I disagree. While anything is possible, and we’re operating with very limited information, I see no reason to think Proffitt naive, as opposed to idealistic and dedicated. In many cases the only way to get the feel of an organization is to parachute in and actually deal with it. It seems to me that the truly spectacular paralyzing dysfunction of Pacifica would be nearly impossible to anticipate sufficiently in advance. One tends to assume, for instance, that however neurotic, incompetent, self-destructively narcissistic and factionalized a bunch of folks may be, that they probably have at least survival instincts one can work with, if only gently and collegially. Well, not this bunch. In any case, he seems to have tried to operate, at first, from what we could see publicly, collegially, by persuasive application of common sense and an implict and at times explicit appeal to their survival instincts. Within fairly short order, a few months, he seems to have reached the firm conclusion that they were hopeless, and resigned.

I emphasize that this is, as are most things with Pacifica, speculation based on far too little information. They seem to be fiercely dedicated to their self-destruction ceremonies taking place in secret, as if looking for an obscure corner in which to circle ‘round and die.

A curious choice, in my opinion, but theirs to make.

    11. Maybe I should have said naive as to the depths of the Pacificans inabilities to leave their natural tendencies? I agree he may have thought that he could wake them up, but no matter, it failed.

Your second paragraph sounds right, like The Peoples' Temple. The Pacificans really do share that personality trait.

Maybe a bit of topic, but are you familiar with Brother Stair? He's been doing broadcasts that sound like those practice runs Jones was doing in the end. I am expecting a new Kool Aid Christian Finale.

    12. Nope, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Brother Stair. I remain, as always, a simple Pastafarian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster

  2. Greetings comrades. Sorry to butt in here, but i wanted to mention there's a new program on my Pod page.
Thanks Chris for all the neat things you've been saying about my work. Bless you, and all the folks here.

Also thanks for the link to my page at the top of yours. Seriously generous!

Sidney I see you posted my earlier comment, glad you liked it. I just got a chance to pop on your page but I can't listen to the show while a nine year old is in the room (too much explaining!).
So you've done way more shows this month than you would have at WBAI where you would have been pre-empted for commercials.
Stay strong! I like the idea of the streets and subways being roamed by an unassuming appearing guy who blackouts and turns into a raging force when confronted by brutes picking on the weak!

  4. Chris - The Sledgehammer, AKA, Tony Ryan is no longer @ the station. However, Cerene Roberts and her boyfriend, Billy Heerwagen are on the PD search committee.

    1. Tony Ryan is still listed as Chief Operations Manager (or some such thing) in the website, but I noticed yesterday that Reggie Johnson was referred to by that title. I find it hard to imagine that someone who appears to be so close to Reimers would be fired. Do you have any details?

  5. My details are from two sources @ WBAI. If I were you, I would be more worried about Cerene. She is an evil woman!
