Hungry wolves in midtown, Brooklyn, and Harlem...

I apologize for the stagnation this blog seems to have suffered in the past few days. The culprit is a software problem that now is close to being fixed. In the meantime, it would be interesting to hear how the following reads on your crystal ball. On mine, viewed without the Reimers gang's rose-colored glasses, it does not look too promising.

  1. In Islam, someone who dies in jihad goes directly to heaven and has his choice of 72 virgins.

What happens to radio stations that die while raising funds?

    1. Good question, Justine. Of course, WBAI has been doing both for a very long time, but I think they will soon discover that you can't raise the rent with a rant. They are dummies, but I think they will find some way to re-channel that green stuff. I may be wrong, they might use the money to erect a statue of Mumia.

    2. What happens? Clear Channel, CBS or Cumulus come in and buy you out.

I must be getting old. I remember when Leonard Peltier was the poster boy for American "political prisoners."

  2. Reimers is either the greatest evil genius since Wile E. Coyote or a total finacial imbecile with no sense of priorities.

OK... Let me get this straight. The June ESB rent is returned and goes to pay other bills, except those for WBAI's offices and studio space, which are the most basic necessities of the station? What? Huh? When they get booted from those places are they going to get a couple of large tents in an empty lot and look like the base in MASH?

Reimers should retire from radio and take a job as a finacial planner, which seems to be his mysterious forte. Suze Orman has NOTHING on this guy.

Seriously. You can't write fiction this absurd.

    1. I think Reimers may be the latter, with a streak of the former.

Moving right along, how many times have we heard it shouted from two locations and aired from the third that the moves to Harlem and Brooklyn is saving WBAI so much money that it lights up the path to independence? What happened to those savings? Hmmmmm

I agree, this stuff goes way beyond fiction, as we have known it.

Your afterthought regarding WBAI's subcarrier activity compounds the need for honest and thorough accounting.

    2. Doesn't WBAI (and Pacifica) have lawsuits they are paying off? Maybe some embezzlement? Money does seem to disappear, doesn't it? Who pays Reimers salary? Pacifica, WBAI or both combined?

I really wonder if WBAI management even knows they have Radio Maria on its subcarriers. Maybe that's the case and they don't even pay anymore. I wonder who would want to pay to be on a subcarrier, anyway. It's such an old technology that no one but a techy, like me, even knows anything about or has a radio capable of receiving it. I'll bet you I am one of the few WBAI listeners who even knows about it.

    3. It certainly appears to be a well-kept secret—your mention of Radio Maria is news to me. We have already concluded that there must be hidden expenses, so why not hidden income, as well?

I believe there are, indeed, lawsuits—as I understand it, the lay-offs (firings) of that very mixed group of 19 is still festering. Embezzlement? Well, there's a history of it, and this is not a group that advocates change. :)

Reimers' salary? I think it is paid by people who don't even realize it.

As a body, Pacifica is laying low, but individual members continue hurling accusations at each other at Nalini's list. The "report" that sparks this exchange was of little or no interest over there—the posters just continued their name-calling while the puppeteers plot and manipulate what is, in effect, a coup.

    4. Maybe I should explain what we're talking about to any readers who are unfamiliar with this..

Radio Maria is a Catholic radio service which has rented both WBAI subcarriers (one for Italian language and one for Spanish language) for at least twenty years to broadcast its programs. To receive it, you need an SCA enabled radio, as SCA subcarriers are not receivable by regular radios. SCA is an old technology used mainly for ethnic programming, reading for the blind, and other odd things.

Anyway, here is something I found that may be of interest.

I have a feeling that the Radio Maria rental is kept quiet because of the religious nature of it more than anything else. But who knows...

  3. I forgot to mention that I recently got my paws on an SCA enabled radio and noticed WBAI still carries Radio Maria's Italian and Spanish services on its two subcarriers. Any idea how much Radio Maria pays for this?

  5. If you didn't hear Hay-tie between about 6:30AM - 7:00AM this morning, I would suggest taking a listen. He wanted callers. He got them, to hysterical results.

One was a dummy who can't seem to figure out that maybe he shouldn't always carry his marijuana on him, as he's always getting searched by the cops. Another was a guy with a great idea that seemed to totally baffle Hay-tie - WBAI should pay the listeners to listen...

A good insight into the people listening.

    1. I heard it and just told TPM that Haskins is getting worse with every show. I am trying to get my audio capture software to work again—it ceased doing so when I paid for an upgrade.

I agree that the few listeners who call these shows tell us much about the audience downgrade.
