It's a "so long, suckers" letter, trying to make himself look good as he leaves the Foundation in a rubble largely of his and his allies' own doing. He approved the last two budgets (one which he and the former CFO created) for KPFK which had a half a million dollar deficit in each one. Unless you have a ultra rich progressive who's willing to fund or spearhead a funding campaign, that means funding will come from corporate sponsors. That's the continuing trend at many schools. A corporation comes in, funds a dept. or a dept. chair. In return, the school gives up control. Business schools are still one of the fastest growing sections in many schools. The last time I saw him was with Aimee Allison on KPFA's old morning show trashing Pacifica's national director on-air. You're asking people to donate to your station. At the same time, you're trashing your boss on-air on the morning show. And you don't care.

What are all the reasons why Tiekert's stayed at Pacifica this long? Who knows. Just for the record, our position is for increased collaboration between Pacifica and local educational institutions including a deposit of its earliest materials to complement the continued prosperity of the PRA's top-shelf staff. PRA has been one of the best examples of a sound preservation initiative in the U.S., and due to austerity cuts the best way to insure its flourishing is to find a home and preservation grants for degrading tapes, which are usually pre-1990.

Best, Josh Shepperd
Radio Preservation Task Force (Library of Congress)J.S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09528223443443259505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486287910626602438.post-50535860676849105952016-08-30T10:19:39.357-04:002016-08-30T10:19:39.357-04:001. Assigning blame for our crisis is usually a dis...1. Assigning blame for our crisis is usually a distraction from fixing it.

I've listened to him on various meetings. He is intelligent and capable but he's also been partisan. Nothing wrong about being partisan but at some point you need to try to compromise. To date, his allies have not done so at all.

2. Fundraising tactic wish-lists are not going to solve our problems. Good ideas need personnel to implement them.

He has a valid point about fundraising. Management is too absorbed just getting by day to day. That's why I'd like to see continuous fundraising within the context of programming. We could raise significant money on an ongoing basis and end the long boring dedicated fundraisers.

3. Incremental cost cuts are not going to solve our problems. We can't make cuts deep enough to close our deficits without compromising our ability to keep fundraising at current levels.

I agree we can't cut our way out of this. That's why it is important to find ways to evaluate and change programming.

1. Stop the bleeding: Put WBAI into an LMA.

An LMA without some kind of recovery plan is just a slow path to a sale. LMAs are usually a precursor to a sale.

2. Save our History: re-locate the Pacifica Radio Archive to a University.

Its unfortunate to say because of the mismanagement and withholding of central services payments but the archives are better off being managed by a third party.

3. Fix what we can: focus turn-around efforts on WPFW. Like WBAI, WPFW's deficits approach $500,000/year. Unlike WBAI, WPFW doesn't have insurmountably high overhead.

Its interesting that he wants to try to save WPFW and not WBAI. WPFW is arguably worse off than WBAI. At any rate, its a false choice. A reformed WBAI that includes programming from other stations and affiliates would benefit the entire network

4. New revenue channels: the Affiliates Program.

The affiliates have been screwed over and denied representation on the PNB because his group selected two bogus affiliate directors from stations which have no relationship to Pacifica.

5. Fast money. We need an infusion of one-time cash to to keep from going under while the long-term solutions listed above go into effect.

Mortgaging is a big step. I'm not sure it makes sense but I will give him credit. He voted to mortgage the properties but the IED has so far ignored this resolution which would have used part of the proceeds to fund the audits.

Michael Ochoanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486287910626602438.post-89013071061672840562016-08-30T07:24:16.330-04:002016-08-30T07:24:16.330-04:00milton allamadi .... I can't really critique them at all, since they make sense.

Let's all play a little game for a minute and imagine we are not WBAI listeners but listeners of the other stations. What do we see from WBAI? A literal fifth wheel dragging the network down into debt and problems. We ask, "Wouldn't Pacifica be better without WBAI?" The answer, from this perspective, is "Yes." Why isn't important. All that matters is that WBAI is injurious to Pacifica and its four other stations.

Considering what a brainiac Reimers is, I predict that the program changes will be murderous to WBAI. He seems to want to get rid of money making shows up front. If Pacifica doesn't put a stop to him and take control, then my "game" above becomes even truer.

Heal up, you still have some longboats to take out on raids.

SDLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486287910626602438.post-28463365890627772382016-08-29T19:57:46.477-04:002016-08-29T19:57:46.477-04:00Be well, Chris.
